Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania is a strange, beautiful, and enchanting city. Peaceful streets of the Old Town lie together with the remnants of the city’s defensive walls and castles, which panoramic views of the city’s churches of various styles – Gothic, Renaissance, Classic, and Baroque.

Buildings of the modernist and socialist realism era are now on the shadow of modern skyscrapers. This small city has a lively arts and culture movement.

UNESCO has declared this, Europe's largest baroque old town, a World Heritage site.

ORIENTATION

Vilnius has an area of 402 square kilometres (155 sq mi) and is located in south eastern Lithuania. The Old Town is situated in a picturesque valley of two rivers – the Vilnia and the Neris, at the junction of trade roads, next to the fort, which was guarded by Vilnius castle in the ancient times.

The city lies 312 kilometres (194 mi) from the Baltic Sea and Klaipėda, the major Lithuanian seaport.

 

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit Vilnius as far as weather is concerned is between April and September, as the days are warm, drier and pleasant to wander around. In winter gets very cold, but it is the time of the year when more cultural events take place.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

Vilnius International Airport (VNO) is only 10 km/7 miles from the city centre.

Outside the airport you can take the bus nr. 1 or 2 directly to the city (nr.1 goes to the train station and nr. 2 goes to the city centre).

There is a train connection between the airport and the main Railway Station.

A taxi ride to the centre costs around 20-30 LT and takes about 15 minutes.

 

You can also fly to Kaunas airport (served by many Ryanair routes), which is 100km from Vilnius,  and then taking the bus (about 2 hours) or train (about 1.5 hour) to get there.

 

TRAVELLING AROUND

Vilnius has an organized net of trolleybuses and minibuses operating the city www.vilniustransport.lt.

The Old Town is quite small and easy to visit on foot.
