Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, is a city located on the north-eastern tip of Brazil, on the Atlantic coast and very popular for its beaches. Natal has a fairly flat territory, with high sand dunes around the beach areas on the southern part of the city. It is delimited by the Rio Potengi on the northwest and the Atlantic beaches on the southeast. Over 20 gorgeous islands Forte dos Reis Magos - the star-shaped fort Sunset in Potengy River ORIENTATION The most popular beaches are the surf beach of Praia dos Artistas to the north, then Praia de Areia Preta and Praia Ponta Negra to the south. Between these two last ones there is a huge concentration of hotels. BEST TIME TO VISIT The best time to visit is from November to February and July. HOW TO GET THERE The region is served by Augusto Severo International Airport, located 20Km from Natal. To get to the city centre the best option is to take a taxi or a minibus. TRAVELLING AROUND Natal is a big city, with very large streets. There are many buses connecting the two main areas of Ponta Negra and Cidade Alta, including the city beaches. Taxis are another inexpensive way to get around, and you can also rent-a-car or a buggy.
