Montreal is the cultural capital of Quebec and the second largest city in Canada. This energetic city has an extremely rich culture and history, blending European styled streets and buildings with ultra modern skyscrapers.
The island of Montreal is located between the Rivière des Prairies and the St Lawrence River, on the south eastern side of Canada.
REASONS TO GO
A city with a great and romantic European style
The beautiful cobbled streets of Old Montréal
The International Jazz Festival and the Film festival, in summertime
ORIENTATION
The island of Montréal is located at the convergence of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers. Most of the city streets are set in a grid outline with St. Lawrence Boulevard crossing the island from south to north. The city centre is to be found between the mountain (Mont Royal) and St. Lawrence River. In the past, the centre was located along the river in a district now called Old Montréal - the most important tourist attraction of the city.
The Underground City is another important feature. It is a huge underground network with shopping centres, metro stations, and many other attractions.
BEST TIME TO GO
The best time to visit Montreal is in the summer, when the weather is quite pleasant and when many amazing cultural events take place. The city is also very beautiful in autumn, with the autumn colours, and in winter, when it gets covered with snow.
HOW TO GET THERE
Montréal-Trudeau Airport is located 20 minutes from the city centre. To get to the city centre you can travel by taxi or by Aérobus.
GETTING AROUND
By Foot
Montreal is a great and fun city to walk around. From the downtown area, you can get to the Montréal Underground Pedestrian Network, which is an immense network of walkways, with hundreds of shops, restaurants and services. Besides that, it connects to the several performance venues, theatres and cinemas, hotels, attractions and museums.
By public transportation
The metro is also an easy way to get around in the city. It can be accessed via the city’s Underground Pedestrian Network: two of the main lines connect downtown to the most important attractions and to several bus stops and train stations.
By Bike
The city has 350 kilometres of bike paths, making is easier to explore. Many bike paths will take you to the principal tourist sights.
