Bucharest is Romania's capital and largest city with a population of 2.6 million inhabitants in the urban area.

Bucharest has a varied and emergent cultural scene and a miscellaneous blend of buildings from traditional Romania to buildings influenced by French architects. This is the reason why many call Bucharest the "the Paris of the East" or "Little Paris."

REASONS TO GO

The George Enescu International Festival - a cultural event named after the famous Romanian musician and composer

Bucharest's elegant early 20th-century architecture with French influences

The Village Museum, Romanian Athenaeum and the Peasant Museum

BEST TIME TO GO

Bucharest has a temperate-continental climate with really hot summers and very cold winters. The best time to visit is between April and June, and from September until early December.

ORIENTATION

Bucharest is a city located on the south eastern area of the Romanian Plain, on the banks of the Dâmboviţa River and crossed by several lakes. The city has around 226 square kilometres (87 sq mi) and has a fairly round form, with the centre situated close to the University Square.

The most important boulevards run North-South from the Triumphal Arch down to the Civic Centre. Calea Victoriei - an extension of Soseaua Kisseleff - is the place where the city's inhabitants usually like to walk on summer evenings.

In the Old Town you will find imposing public buildings like the National History Museum and the main Post Office and beautiful green parks, like the Cişmigiu Garden.

HOW TO GET THERE

Henri Coanda International Airport (in Otopeni) is located about 20 km from the Bucharest city centre.

The Express Bus 783 travels to the city centre, with stops at Baneasa Airport, Piata Presei Libere, Piata Victoriei, Piata Romana, Piata Universitatii and Piata Unirii. It leaves 15 minutes (every 30 minutes during weekends and takes around 40 minutes to the centre. You can also take a taxi to the city centre. The only taxi service allowed to offer transfers from the airport is Fly Taxi and costs around €10.

You can also take a train service, called Henri Coandă Expres. To get to the train station (2 km from the airport) there is a shuttle bus. Once you reach the train station, there is a 30 minutes journey to get to the main train station Gara de Nord, from where you can take public transportation (Metro and buses) to the centre.

Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (in Baneasa) is located 8 km from the city centre Bucharest and is used for charter flights and low-cost flights from/to destinations in Europe.

To get to the city centre you can take bus nr. 131. The bus nr. 205 travels to the main train station (Gara de Nord). A taxi ride should cost around € 5.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Bucharest has an efficient public transportation system formed by: bus (autobuz), tram (tramvai) and trolley bus (troilebuz) as well as subway (Metrou).

The underground is the best way to get around in the city centre. There are four metro lines (M1, M2, M3 and M4). The most commonly used line is the north-south M2 line.

The express bus system is more useful for reaching destinations in the suburbs, as only a few of them really go through the centre itself.

Taxi

There are a many taxi companies in Bucharest and you'll easily find a taxi here, but be aware and don't take any independent taxi drivers and but use only the services of big taxi companies. Always insist with the driver to start the meter, and pay the sum displayed on it.
