ORIENTATION
Faro is located in the Southern Portugal, and is the capital city of Algarve Region.
The Old City of Faro is well-preserved, with a pretty harbour, cobblestone streets and 18th century Portuguese and Moorish-influenced style. It is great place with beautiful streets and sights to walk around. Faro is home of the Ria Formosa lagoon and has also a long beach almost 7 Kilometres away from the city centre.
BEST TIME TO GO
All year round Algarve enjoys a great weather, with mild winters and hot dry summers.
Between early June and late September (try to skip August), the region is particularly lively and worth visiting.
HOW TO GET THERE
By plane
Faro Airport is the main airport for the region, having many domestic and international connections and some low cost companies too. From Faro airport the train station and bus terminals (in the city centre) can be easily reached by taxi.
By bus
There are daily bus connections between Faro and other Portuguese and even Spanish cities.
By train
The Alpha Pendular - the high-speed train runs at least twice a day to and from Lisbon. It takes around 2.5 hours. The Inter City trains run more frequently but take a little longer - about 4 hours.
TRAVELLING AROUND
By bus
Buses nr.16 and nr.14 travel around the city and the airport of Faro. Tickets can be bought from the driver.
By car
Renting a car is a good option to visit the surroundings.
On foot
Walking is the best way to get to know the city centre.
