ORIENTATION
Sicily is the biggest island in the Mediterranean, split from the Italian peninsula by the strait of Messina. It has big mountain ranges such as Peloritani, Nebrodi, Madonie and Iblei, but the plains are sparse, with the exception of the area around Catania. The coast offers a scenery of mesmerizing beauty almost everywhere; groups of smaller islands are spread round the coast. The Etna, situated in the centre of a volcanic part of Sicily, is the highest active volcano in Europe (3.323 meters).
BEST TIME TO GO
Sicily has warm winters and very hot summers. From June to September, the island gets crowded with tourists. From April to June and then September and October are very good months to visit Sicily. The weather will be fine for exploring the island and also for enjoying its amazing beaches.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Plane
Fontanarossa is the Catania Airport, with domestic flights to most parts of Italy, some international routes and many charter flights.
AMT Alibus Service leaves every 20 minutes from 5.00 am to midnight, from the Airport to the City Centre and the Train Station.
The Falcone Borsellino Airport, in Palermo (PMO) is the second airport, with many domestic and international budget flights.
From the airport to the city centre there are buses every 30 minutes.
The Trapani-Birgi Airport is the third airport with a recent raise of traffic thanks to the low-cost Ryanair and AirBee.
