Lyon is on of the biggest cities in France. It is the capital of the Rhone-Alpes region, with around 470.000 inhabitants, and is located 450 km south of Paris. Lyon is also recognized as an historical and gastronomic city with an exciting cultural panorama.
REASONS TO GO
The Roman Theatres and the Fourvière Basilica
The cultural life, the museums, the antiques stores, the new and trendy fashion designers, the markets, the squares and the gardens.
The bouchons (Lyon small traditional restaurants) and the Wine bars (with good selection of wines, especially from Beaujolais, Burgundy and the Rhône valley).
ORIENTATION
Lyon lays around the junction between the Rhône and Saône rivers forming a peninsula or "Presqu'île”. The medieval city (Vieux Lyon) was built on the west side of the Saône river at the bottom of the Fourvière hill, west of the Presqu'île.
BEST TIME TO GO
Between May and September the weather is more pleasant to visit this region. In August the in resident population and students go away from the city, and it might look a bit deserted and with not much going on.
HOW TO GET THERE
The Saint-Exupéry International Airport is located 25 km to the east of Lyon. To get to the centre you can take a bus service, leaving every 20 minutes from the Terminal 1, called Satobus. It takes 30-50 minutes and costs €8.60. A taxi ride will cost around €50 and take about 30 minutes.
Lyon is also connected by TGV to many cities like Paris (two hours) or Marseille (1 hr 45 min). The three main train stations are Perrache, Part-Dieu and Saint-Exupéry (this station is outside the city and serves the airport).
TRAVELLING AROUND
The city centre perfect to visit walking. Lyon's public transportation system is very efficient and central areas and suburbs are very well served.
