The East Midlands is a region of England that consists of most of the eastern half of the traditional region of the Midlands. It comprises the area of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and most of Lincolnshire, even though people frequently speak of the "East Midlands" with only the more urban areas of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire in mind. The point where the three counties meet is known as Trentlock.

 

The region covers an area of around 15.000 sq km and has a population of 4.4 million.

ORIENTATION

The highest point in the region is Kinder Scout, in the Derbyshire Peak District at 2,088 ft (636 m). The geology of the region includes principally limestone, and has the East Midlands Oil Province. Charnwood Forest has a great deal of volcanic rock being around 600 million years old, and is a good source of granite.

 

The centre of the East Midlands area is approximately between Bingham and Bottesford.

HOW TO GET THERE

East Midlands Airport in North West Leicestershire is situated between the three main cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham.

It´s quick and convenient to get to and from East Midlands Airport by bus. A whole range of bus services links the airport with the surrounding towns and villages.

 

Nottingham Skylink - This service links the airport with Nottingham city centre and railway station, half hourly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

Leicester Skylink - This service operates every hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

Derby Skylink - This service provides links with Derby city centre and Derby railway station every half hour during the day and hourly at other times, 7 days a week. 

 

East Midlands Airport is conveniently located for local connections to the mainline rail network. The railway stations of Loughborough, Nottingham and Derby are all just a short bus ride from the airport.

Rail connections to and from the North and West

If you are travelling via Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Yorkyou can make a connection at Derby railway station using the Derby Skylink bus.

 

Rail connections to and from the South

If you travel via Northampton, Luton and London for destinations in the south, you can make a connection at Loughborough railway station using the Loughborough Skylink bus.

 

Rail connections to and from the East

If you are travelling to or from easterly destinations you can connect via Grantham, Lincoln, Newark, Peterborough and Mansfield to Nottingham railway station where you´ll find the Nottingham Skylink bus.

 

Rail connections to East Midlands Parkway Station

For trains stopping at Parkway check National Rail Enquiries. Passengers can connect to Parkway on the Railink bus which operates every 30 minutes from 7am to 11.30pm.
