Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China, as well as the political, educational and cultural centre of the country, with rich historical sites and important institutions.

The city is very flat, with only three hills to be found in the city boundaries. This vast city has amazing and important places, part of China´s history, such as the Forbidden City, the Tiananmen Square and the nearby Great Wall of China.

ORIENTATION

The heart of the city and principal landmark is the Tiananmen Square in Dongcheng District, the world's largest public square.

The square is delimited by imposing buildings such as the Great Hall of the People, the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, the Museum of Chinese History, the Qianmen Gate and of course, the Forbidden City.

The CCTV Building and the World Trade Centre Tower III, located on Chaoyang District are two stupendous examples of contemporary architecture.

There are also several vestiges from the medieval city including the Ming Dynasty City Wall Site Park and Qianmen in Chongwen District and the Drum and Bell Towers in Dongcheng District.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Beijing is in late spring and autumn when sunny days are warm and pleasant. The intense heat of summer and the freezing winds in winter can be quite extreme.

HOW TO GET THERE

Beijing's airport is located 25km (16 miles) northeast of the city centre.

Transport to the city:

The Airport-City Shuttle Bus departs every 30 minutes;

There are buses with six different routes into the city - the most popular is to Xidan in central Beijing, close to the Forbidden City.

The ABC express train connects Beijing International Airport Terminals 1, 2 and 3 with Dongzhimen and Sanyuanqiao metro stations in about 30 minutes.

It´s also possible to take a taxi.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Travel by the Beijing subway or taxi is probably the easier option. The subway has seven lines, a light rail line and the ABC express train. The most useful lines are Line 1, which passes under Tiananmen Square and goes to many tourist highlights; Line 2, which is a round line that serves the Central and North train stations and line 5 that also connects to many important attractions numerous tourist sights. Transfers between all lines are free.

You can also take a taxi to move around the city: they are plentiful and inexpensive.
