Djerba is an island located in south-east Tunisia, and very well known for its amazing beaches and stunning, relaxing and tranquil countryside. This island is a great ecological destination, preserving also beautiful villages, with its traditions, culture and architecture.
REASONS TO GO
The wonderful beaches
The colourful markets in Houmt Souk
The silent and relaxing towns inland
ORIENTATION
Djerba is to be found in the southeast of Tunisia in the Gulf of Gabes. The island's airport is close to Melita, in the northwest side of the island, 8km (5 miles) from Houmt Souk, the islands capital.
The island is quite small, with just 29km (18 miles) wide and 27km (17 miles) long, and is connected to the mainland by a Roman bridge and a ferry from Ajim to El Jorf.
Besides the wonderful seaside and the picturesque capital of Houmt Souk, there are beautiful mosques, traditional menzels and extensive olive and orange tree plantations to discover.
BEST TIME TO GO
Djerba is a great year-round destination. If you want to enjoy the warmest temperatures, then the best time to go is probably between April and October.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Plane
Djerba-Zarzis Airport connects the island with the major Europe destinations. You can take a bus or a taxi to the Houmt Souk centre. Taxis are for sure the most efficient and fastest way to get in town (about 15 minutes).
By Ferry
For those who arrive by car, the ferry between Jorf and Ajim runs every hour from 4am to midnight and every two hours from midnight to 4am (free for pedestrians).
TRAVELLING AROUND
Public transportation is quite limited but taxis are available for reasonable prices.
The cheapest way to get around and out is by bus. From the bus station there are scheduled departures to Tunis, Sousse, Sfax, Gabs, Zarzis and other southern towns on the mainland. Instead, you can hire a car, scooter or even a bicycle, which is a very practical and fun way to explore the island and move around.
