Kenya is a country in Eastern Africa that borders Ethiopia and Sudan to the north and Uganda to the west. Its Indian Ocean coast lies is delimited by Somalia to the north east and Tanzania to the south. In this country it is possible to find a very rich and varied landscape: great savannahs, immaculate beaches and coral reefs, equatorial forests and snow-capped peaks. Kenya is world known for having some of the best game reserves where the finest African flora and fauna are to be found. TO AVOID The north western part of the country can be particularly dangerous and violent.
BEST TIME TO GO Usually the weather is warm and wet at the coast, fresh and humid in the central highlands, and hot and dry in the north and east. Rainfall peaks are in November and April. HOW TO GET THERE Kenya has three international airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi), Moi International Airport (Mombasa) and Moi International Airport (Eldoret).
TRAVELLING AROUND
Domestic flights Kenya has a good network of domestic flights, with connections to the coast, the major game parks and the Western Kenya.
Taxi In Nairobi, Mombasa and other large Kenyan towns, taxis are commonly available and opportune. Taxis are not metered, and a price should be settled with the driver previous to departure.
Bus Buses frequently run between most cities and towns and are an inexpensive way to travel the country. Some private bus companies now offer shuttle services between Nairobi and Mombasa and Nairobi and Arusha (Tanzania) as well as city airports.
Matatu The most popular form of public transport in Kenya is the Matatu, which is a minibus operating on set routes, and collecting as many passengers as possible along the way.
Rail Kenya has a railway connection between Nairobi- Mombasa and Nairobi-Kisumu. It is also possible to take the train through to Kampala. The overnight Nairobi- Mombasa rail trip is the most popular rail route for visitors.
Rental Car Getting around in Kenya, especially out of the city, is tough. The roads are often in a decaying state due to abandon. Renting a Jeep is therefore the best option.
