Botswana is an interior country situated in Southern Africa, surrounded by Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Botswana is well-known for its wildlife with areas like the Chobe National Park, Moremi National Park in the Okavango Delta and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
REASONS TO GO
The most spectacular natural reserves in the world.
The Okavango Delta.
The luxury lodges and camps.
ORIENTATION
Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert, which covers more than 70% of its territory. The Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta, is situated in the northwest.
Botswana has assorted areas of wildlife habitat. Besides the delta and desert areas, there are grasslands and savannas.
The Chobe National Park has the world's largest concentration of African elephants.
There are also focused sanctuaries like the Khama Rhino Sanctuary (for Rhinoceros) and Makgadikgadi Sanctuary (for Flamingos), both located in Central District.
BEST TIME TO GO
The best time to go is between April and November, when most animals migrate to the Okavango Delta.
HOW TO GET THERE
Botswana's main airport is Sir Seretse Khama in Gaborone. Most flights arriving in Botswana are from South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Another option which can save tou some money if you have time is to fly to Joanesburgh and then rent a car and drive to Gaborone. From there you can either book a flight to Maun or other game reserves on the Okavango Delta. To Chobe National park ther are 900 kms to go via Francistown.
TRAVELLING AROUND
All Botswana's population centres are connected by highways and quite good roads. The secondary roads can be sometimes good but very often they are deep, rutted sand or mud.
Renting a car, particularly 4W-D, will permit you to better explore some of Botswana's most stunning wilderness areas.
If you embark on a camping trip into the bush remember that it requires a good and careful planning and preparation. The remote areas, accessible only by four-wheel drive sometimes don’t have any water, petrol, or food.
VISA
Citizens of most European and Common-wealth countries do not require a visa for entry into Botswana.
Visitors should check with Botswana embassies or consulates, or their travel agents, before departure.
